If you want to have a beautiful rose garden this year, then one factor you will want to consider before making a purchase is which climate zone you are located in. Rose care is not as a difficult as many believe. Roses do require care and maintenance, but if you select a variety of rose that has been bred to do well in your climate zone - you will have less care and maintenance to do. There are many types of roses and some do better in a particular climate - for example, if you live in an area where you have cold winters then you will want a hardy rose that will survive the cold temperatures. Selecting your rose bush, tree or climber based on climate zones is important and actually quite simple. Start by looking up the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map to find your location on that map. This will tell you what climate zone you are located in. This map is the culmination of years of tracking the average minimum (coldest) temperature in North America. For example, I live in San Diego, CA. and my hardiness zone is 11 - the average minimum temperature in my region is above 40F. Now, keep in mind there will be some variations depending on your elevation. Colder temperatures in higher elevations will decrease your hardiness zone number. Lower numbers indicate colder average temperatures.

The map is color-coordinated, which makes it easy to use - each region is indicated by a specific color. But, if you're still not sure what your climate is, simply ask your local garden center - they will be glad to tell you.

This simple but often forgotten step is crucial when you're selecting your rose. Check out the hardiness zone facts on the information label that comes with your plant - these growing instructions will help you make the right decision. Making this step a priority will make you a happy rose grower instead of a disappointed one.

Happy Planting!!
